How to Apply Glitter Eye Makeup

Glittery eye makeup! I love it! The way it sparkles, shines, and shimmers… it makes me feel all sparkly and shiny whenever I wear it! If it were up to me, every day would be a day for wearing glitter (Hey, why not?!), but not everyone feels the same way.

This time of year, however, it’s totally acceptable to shimmer things up a bit more since everything is a bit more festive. Glitter makeup is a wonderful way to add a little extra holiday cheer to your look. But wait… if you’re not used to wearing glitter, maybe you’re wondering how to wear it? Well, never fear, the Glitter Goddess is here to guide you! :)

As with any makeup product, you always have to keep in mind that a little glitter goes a long way. There are so many glitter products out there for the eyes like glitter powder eyeshadows, glitter cream eyeshadows, glitter pencil eyeliners and glitter liquid liners, that it’s possible to get overwhelmed. So let me break it down by saying it’s best to use only one glitter product at a time. I always say when in doubt, less is best. So I would go with either a glitter eyeshadow or a glitter eyeliner, not both. Here are some tips on how to wear them all:

  • Glitter eyeshadow:

This is probably the most subtle way to go because the glitter in the eyeshadow is usually very small and finely ground (i.e more of a shimmer than a true glitter). Apply it the same way as you would normally put on eyeshadow. You can also apply your normal eyeshadow first and then sweep a glitter eyeshadow on top of your lid to add a lovely sparkle to your eyes. (Try the Too Faced Eyeshadow Duo in Ooh & AahToo Faced Eyeshadow Duo if you’re looking for a fab glittery eyeshadow) Cream eyeshadows can be a little trickier to work with because they can be harder to blend and are usually very pigmented. I would only use one or two cream eyeshadows to avoid creasing and caking on your lid. (For a great cream eyeshadow set, check out the Sephora Collection Glitter Cream Eyeshadow SetSephora Collection Glitter Cream Eyeshadow Set)

  • Glitter eyeliners:

This is the easiest way to add some glitter to your eyes. All you do is apply your eyeshadow as your would normally, then apply the glitter eyeliner right on top. If you’re doing a pencil (Lorac’s Eye Shadow/Liner in Midnight SparkleLorac Eye Shadow/Liner is a great eyeliner pencil) then apply it on the outer corners of the eyes and blend. If a liquid glitter eyeliner is your choice, then just line your upper lid. (Get the Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner SetUrban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner Set for a variety of eyeliners at a bargain price)

  • Loose powder glitter:

This is for the girl that really wants the “wow factor“. Put on your eye makeup as usual, then, using your eyeshadow blending brush, gently sweep the loose powder glitter over your lid, and/or under your brow bone. You can even bring it down to the top of your cheek bones for an extra glittery look.

Tip Try using a glitter cream eyeshadow as a base for powder eyeshadows, or apply over your regular eyeliner or as eyeliner by itself for an extra special shimmer.

There are also several “Beauty in a Box” kits available at Sephora that have everything you need to become a fellow glitter goddess including eyeshadows, eyeliner, mascara, applicators and even a how too guide! I’m so in love with the Sephora Collection Beauty In A Box Glitter Eyes PaletteSephora Collection Beauty In A Box Glitter Eyes Palette. It’s super fabulous!

So now I hope you’ll go out there and glitter up those eyes! Whether you’re a glitter lover like me, or have always wanted to try it, I hope you have fun and always let the true beauty that is you shine through.

How To Wear Holiday Glitter

With Christmas less than a month away, I thought I’d talk about putting on makeup using one of the holiday season’s hottest makeup trends as well as a personal favorite of mine: Glitter! I’m a girlie girl through and through so I love putting on makeup with anything sparkly, shimmery, shiny, or glittery!

Glitter is so fun and festive and I must confess it makes me feel a little like a fairy princess whenever I wear it. However, how and when to use it can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you’ve never worn it before, so how do you know when is the appropriate time to wear glitter?

When can you wear glitter?

Well, usually the best time to wear glitter is at night, when the lights are low and the glitter will be extra sparkly and sexy. You can wear it during the day if you have a little holiday gathering, or party, but just keep it subdued, like maybe just a glittery lip gloss, or eyeliner. I wouldn’t say that wearing it to work is forbidden, but I would, again, keep it subdued and probably only as it gets closer to the holiday.

How do you wear glitter?

It’s very easy to veer into “looking like a little girl” territory, or like you just fell off the Christmas tree, so it’s very important that you show restraint when wearing glitter. The easiest way to do this is by choosing only one feature to glitter up and use it sparingly. For instance, if you want to use a glittery eyeshadow and/or eyeliner, then don’t do the glitter lip gloss or cheek color, or vice versa. Going with a glitter that has smaller particles is better then one that has bigger pieces. You want it to look glamorous and festive, not tacky and cheesy.

Finding makeup with glitter

What kinds of glitter products are out there? Oh there are so many fabulous products out there, especially this time of year! Just about every cosmetic company has something fabulous for the holiday season. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Glittery Eyeshadow:

I love the Make Up Forever Diamond Powder Eyeshadow in White and Champagne. These loose powders blend easily and have a super fine glitter that is blended with mother of pearl for a super extreme brilliance and brightness. You can use it lone, or use it over or under your regular eyeshadow. Try it on your brow bone and on the inner corner of your eyes for an eye opening experience.

  • Glittery Eyeliner:

I have tried many, but my favorite is the Lorac Eyeshadow/Liner in Midnight Sparkle. You can wear it layered, or blend it for a smokey look. The sparkle adds a fun and sexy vibe and the glitter doesn’t fall into your eyes.

  • Glittery Cheeks:

I love to use my normal blush and then add a bit of my glitter eyeshadow on top. There are blushes that have glitter in them, but my experience with them is that the glitter just doesn’t stay on very well. Using my eyeshadow, I not only get a longer wear, but I have more control of how much glitter I put on.

  • Glittery Lips:

Oh wow, this is tough for me to pick just one, but the one I think I use the most this time of year is Lancome’s Juicy Tubes Jelly Ultra Shiny Lip GlossLancome Juicy Tubes Jelly Ultra Shiny Lip Gloss in Touched by Light. I wear it alone a lot, or I can put it over and liner and lipstick for an extra special sparkle and shine.

  • Glittery Nails:

This is a great option for someone that wants to have the festive feeling that glitter brings with out being too scary. Again, it’s difficult for me to choose just one, but right now I’m loving the OPI Burlesque Holiday 2010 Nail LacquersOPI Burlesque Holiday 2010 Nail Lacquer, especially the color “Tease-y Does It”! (Don’t you just love their names? So cute!). Like the lip gloss, I can wear it alone, or layer it over another nail polish for a little festive fun.

Tip Make sure the glitter you use is OK to use on your face. Craft glitter is not dermatologist tested and could scratch your skin and eyes. I recommend using only glitter sold at the makeup counter for your face.

Alright my little stars, now go out there and shine! Light up the world with your sparkly beauty and celebrate the holiday season with glamor and glitz!
