- Aesthetician
An aesthetician is a skincare specialist who is normally certified by a state licensing board. Aestheticians perform non-invasive skincare treatments such as facials, exfoliation, and other forms of skin therapy.
- Antioxidant
An antioxidant is a molecule capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules. Antioxidants aid in preventing and/or reducing the damage done to your skin by free radicals.
- Blush
A powder, gel, or cream used to add color and definition to the cheeks.
- Bronzer
Bronzer is a powder, gel, or cream designed to give a sun-tanned look without going into the sun.
- Eyebrow color
Eyebrow color is a pencil, powder, or gel used to color, shape, and define eyebrows.
- Cleanser
This is “soap” for your face and is designed to remove makeup as well as dirt and oil. It can come in many forms, for all kinds of skin types, and in a bar, cream, gel, or mousse.
- Concealer
A cream or other dense liquid makeup designed to cover dark circles and blemishes. Apply as needed.
- Crepey
When skin looks dry and crinkly, like crepe paper.
- Day cream
Sometimes called a day moisturizer, this cream, lotion, or sometimes gel is designed to hydrate and protect your skin. Many have an SPF and can have other extras, like oil control or anti-aging benefits. Choose one based on your skin type and other needs.
- Eye cream
Most commonly a cream or gel designed to hydrate the area around the eye. (The thinnest, most delicate skin on your body) The benefits will depend on your skin care needs.
- Eye liner
Generally a colored kohl pencil, liquid, or gel that’s used to shape and define eyes and eye color.
- Eye makeup remover
A liquid gel, or sometimes a cloth sheet, that can be used to gently and efficiently remove makeup. For best results, use an oil-free version.
- Eye shadow
Eye shadow is a colored powder or cream used to enhance eye shape and color.
- Foundation
Foundation is a skin-matching makeup, and it comes in cream, liquid, or powder. Foundations are designed to cover blemishes and imperfections as well as evening out skin tones. Application of foundation should start on the center of the face and blend out.
- Free Radical
A free radical is any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. Biologically-relevant free radicals tend to be chemically reactive. Free radicals are a major source of skin damage and aging. Consistent use of antioxidants is thought to reduce damage done by free radicals.
- Highlighter
Highlighter makeup is usually a liquid or powder cosmetic that’s used to give skin the appearance of being flawless and/or to give your skin a glow. Using a highlighter will help emphasize wherever applied.
- Lip gloss
Adds shine and gloss to lips; normally found in sheer or tinted versions.
- Lip liner
Also known as a lip pencil, a lip liner adds definition to lips and helps prolong the wear of your lip color.
- Lipstick
A cream color for lips.
- Mascara
Mascara is a cream or gel formula used to make eyelashes appear longer and fuller. Adds definition to the eyes.

- Mattify
Applying a matte, or non-shiny, appearance. Often used in reference to the skin on your face.
- Primers
Primers are used to extend the wear of your makeup. There are several different kinds of primers:
- Eye shadow primers
Eye shadow primers help keep your eye shadow on all day and prevents fading and creasing. Apply all all over your eyelid and up to your brow.
- Foundation primers
A foundation primer seals in your moisturizer and prevents your foundation from setting into any fine lines or wrinkles. It also keeps your foundation looking fresh all day and prevents the naturally occurring oils in your face from altering your foundation’s color.
- Lipstick primers
Prevents yourlipstick from fading, bleeding, or traveling into fine lines and wrinkles. Apply all over your lip and slightly outside your lip line.
- Eye shadow primers
- Setting powder
A light powder, usually used to “set” your foundation and helps it last longer.
- Shimmer
A liquid or powder or that contains soft light particles that help to reflect the light and give you a subtle glow.
- Tinted Moisturizer
A moisturizer that contains a tinted color to help even out your skin tone. Will often contain sunscreen to help protect your skin from exposure to the sun.
