Are You True Blue?

What do you think of when I say blue eyeshadow? You instantly flash back to the hideous, frosty blue eyeshadow of the 70′s when Disco roamed the Earth, right? Well trust me when I say that today’s blue eyeshadow is sultry, sexy and all kinds of fabulous! And it’s not just eyeshadows either; I’m talking about eyeliner, mascara, etc.

When you think about the blue tones in todays palettes, think more along the lines of a deep, smokey navy, or inky indigo. Even the lighter blues are more like soft, watercolor blue hues instead of the shocking, electric blue that we all cringe to remember. This ain’t your mother’s blue eyeshadow!

A lot of women I talk to are hesitant to use not only a blue eyeshadow, but any color that’s outside of their day-to-day palette. Aren’t you tired of wearing your safe browns and neutral tones every day? Sure you are… how could you not be? So why not mix it up a bit and try something new?! Blues, especially navy blue, are actually very neutral and everyone can wear them!

Here are a few different ways to wear blue and shake your makeup palette up a bit:

  • Blue Wash

Add just a wash of blue to your lid with either a gold, or peach pink eyeshadow on your brow. This is a great way to test the waters (so to speak) to see if you like blue. You can either keep it minimalistic with no eyeliner, or smudge a little of the blue eyeshadow on your lower lash line as a soft liner. A really great color to check out is Elizabeth Arden’s Color Intrigue Eyeshadow in IndigoElizabeth Arden's Color Intrigue Eyeshadow in Indigo. It’s not too light, and not too dark.

  • Smokey Blue

Try a deep, smokey blue eye with either a nude, glossy lip for day, and a rich red lip for evening. Apply the lightest color on your brow bone, then put the gray in your crease and smoke the deep blue in the outer corner of your eye as well as on top of your eyeliner. So glamorous!

  • Blue Liner

Still not sure? Well, another great way to try blue is with a blue eyeliner. I would go with more of a navy shade such as Lancome’s Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner in MinuitLancome Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner in Minuit. It’s more subtle than the eyeshadow, yet still feels adventurous and different. Give it a try!

I hope this has encouraged you to rethink using blue. Remember, it’s only makeup… you’re supposed to have fun! I’d love to hear your opinion on the blues of today, and yesterday! And if you’re not quite sure what kind of blue would work for you, just use the comment form below to ask away.
